How did NIKE became so successful? - The start

NIKE: Just Do It , is a sentence that a lot of people know nowadays. When people here the sentence only one brand is coming op: NIKE. The brand is the market leader in their market, but how did the company become so successful and what do people think from the brand. In this blog, I will explain the beginning of Nike.

The start of NIKE
Phil Knight is the man who came up with the idea for the company. He was a very sportive man, but he didn’t like the American sport shoes. The shoes were painful during long runs and he wanted to create a brand with better quality of shoes. During his trip in Japan, he visited a factory and made a contract deal to deliver the shoes in America. The name of the brand wasn’t until 1971 NIKE. From 1964 until 1971 the brand operates under the name : Blue Ribbon sport. In the beginning it was hard for the organization to promote the shoes, but in 1960 ( five years after the first production) the organization revenues where over the 1 million dollars.
If Phil Knight wasn't complaining about this shoes, would there be a brand like NIKE? I am curious about your opinion about the history of NIKE and how would you set up a brand like this?

EXTRA:
In a few sentence I described the beginning of Nike, but for you to understand the history of Nike more  until 2014, I have add a video under this sentence.

  1. Very interesting. There is a great book about Phil Knight's life and journey called "Shoe Dog". Nike is a consumer and corporate juggernaut in the world. It is one of the most coveted sponsorships that a club or team can get. This level of popularity does not come without controversy though, as I am sure you have read about Nike making Colin Kaepernick the face of their newest marketing campaign.

    1. The campaign of Colin Kaepernick is a really fascinating process to follow.

The slogan "Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything could be mean different things and it fun to google the meanings and things about the process about the whole campaign.

I believe that NIKE need to be innovative with the different campaign and this is really good example of a new, current and innovative idea.

  2. I actually don’t know how I would set up a brand like this. It is interesting how Phil Knight converts a personal need to create a leading world brand.

Travelling around the world is always a good idea to obtain some information to do something you could insert in your country, that was what Phil did in this case.

Thanks for that we have such a brand like Nike. I'm sure due that if Phil Knight did not create this one, another person would be doing another type of brand like him.

    1. It's interesting to think how we would have set it up when there was this gap in the market.

However, as Phil Knight had this problem with the shoes, surely many other people had the same problem, and many of them would have tried to take advantage of it too but failed throughout the process. Which is when Knight's intelligence surpassed the others and could actually make a profit with it.

Which proving the point that identifying the need is as important as to knowing how to manage it and have the right skills to make a successful business out of it.

    2. I also think that the other runners shared the same feeling that Phil Knight had about American shoes. That's why, as Victor says, it's very likely that other entrepreneurs would have tried to create a line of shoes with more comfort, but they stayed at the doors of success.

For this reason, I believe that the success of the Nike brand is thanks to Mr. Knight, who knew how to make his product known and satisfy the needs of a large number of consumers.

To conclude, what surprised me most was how Nike's slogan: Just do It, was inspired by Gary Gilmore, who was sentenced to death in 1977 for stealing and murdering two women. When Gilmore faced the firing squad, he said, "let's do this.

    4. I am happy, that you all have replied under this message. I have the same opion about the start of NIKE and I was currious if other people also shared this with me. I think a lot of people would have the same opinion as us.

I didn't know very much about the Gary Gilmore case and it is a really strong point to think about. Also it is strange to asked ourself: what kind of brands will be excist if nike wasn't here.

      Thankyou for all you comments

  4. This is my first time to read the history of Nike, the video is very helpful!
To answer the question, I would say there is always someone who is complaining about the products they are using now. The difference is that either that person decide to come up with his own products or not. Just like Lamborghini? Right? Rambo now has become the few top brands in the luxary car market!

It is nice to hear that the video was helpfull to understand the history. Lamborghini is a similar case and a good compare.

In my opinion Nike is one of the best brands of sports clothing and footwear in the world, if not the best. I've been using Nike sneakers for a long time, because for my physical characteristics, Nike provides me with sneakers that meet my needs.
I found the Nike story very interesting and how it came out and triumphed out of nowhere.
On the other hand, Nike was founded with the purpose of creating the best running shoes, and now has shoes for most sports in the world.

    1. Thankyou for responding on the Blog. The purpose was to created a running shoes, but I think the brand wanted to be innovative and improve their services by offering more than just a running shoe. Nowadays Nike has sportclothes, casual shoes and sport shoes.

I believe to created a populair brand like Nike , you need to be innovative in your product range. There are a lot of competitors in this industry, and therefore NIKE need to be special.

    - I was always tried start-up or business before, however, I recognized that it's very hard to take acts on. The signature slogan "just to it." it probably means that do not just complain the products and stand still your area, move whatever you want or whether you have plan to do something or not. Just do anything. It seems very simple.
He doesn't like uncomfortable american shoes and just make more comfortable shoes.
That's number one sports brand these days. Very interesting article and good experience to know the begging of NIKE.

  9. Actually Nike is my favorite sports brand. It shoes has great design and very comfortable. Phil Knight put comfortable into the first place, that's also one of the reason that makes Nike so successful.
The story makes me think of a Japanese drama called 陸王. There's a small company makes tradition shoes in Japan called 足袋, which are worn when dressing in kimono.
The founder of that company notice that his shoes has advantage of comfortable which is suitable for the marathon runner. At the end, that company transfer into a running shoes company in order to make more profits cause people nowadays are more willing to wear running shoes but not 足袋. This drama is adapted from real story.
What do this company and Nike do is regard the quality as the most important thing as well as monitor the trend of the market.

    1. Thankyou for your comment. I agree with you that the main goal should be creating a comfortable shoes. If the shoes are comfortable, the customers will buy it and if you add a nice design it would become a bigger succes.

The example in Japan is a really simular case and it was fun to read!

  10. The brand launched because of the need for more professional sport equipment and if not Knight then someone else would start do it. The company grew with the years passing and a lot of good business decisions led to its supremacy. They had their crises and for example the idea of signing professional athletes starting with Michael Jordan took the brand to another level. These days its not only a sports brand but also a huge player in fashion and everyday clothes.

NIKE in the global Market

NIKE in the global Market Nowadays NIKE and Adidas are biggest competitors of each other and customers have their own preferences. To see   the global revenues there is an image of the revenues from the biggest competitors in 2016.  As you can see Nike has from the beginning a higher revenue stream than the other competitors, but nowadays NIKE and Adidas are more competitive in the business. The '"fight" for sponshorships is bigger than ever and both brands want to be the best. It is also fun to see the different between NIKE and Adidas if you see the sponsorships with football players. Below this line there is a video with different players and the two brands. Are there any suprises? I would also to know you why people choose for NIKE and not for Adidas. Is this because of the sport athletes marketing, the quality of products or your own choice.

How did Nike became so succesful- Sponsorships

Sponsorships To build an imperium and be the market leader like NIKE, the organization must have a good marketing department and strategy.   "No company in the world spends as much money on sports sponsorships as Nike”  (Isidore, 2015) The endorsement of NIKE is one of the key elements to build a brand like this. The organization has a lot of big sport athletes to promote the brand like: 1.        Cristiano Ronaldo ( See a commerial at the end) 2.        Lebron James 3.        Tiger Woods 4.        Serena Williams 5.        Michael Jordan Nike is using professional athletes and celebrities   to promote their   products. The influence from the athletes and celebrities could influence new customers. Especially really big fans of the athletes would like to have a product from their idol. Some athletes have even their own line like Lebron James. The revenues from the products is higher than the cost of the sponsorship and therefore the organization spends
